Marjan, Layla and Bahar Aminpour open the Babylon Café out of the old bake shop in bucolic Ballinacroagh, a quaint hamlet in County Mayo. It is here that the young Aminpour sisters sell the exotic and fragrant fare of their homeland, Iran, after having fled the Islamic Revolution seven years ago. The locals are wary – theirs is a tight-knit community after all – but they are soon ensnared by the magic of rosewater baklava, red lentil soup and abgusht stew.
Business is booming, but not all are so welcoming. Will a group of close-minded villagers, affronted by the foreign and unknown, run the sisters out of town? Will Marjan, Layla and Bahar, haunted by their troubled pasts, find sanctuary in this small Irish village?
Fans of Chocolat and Like Water for Chocolate will be spellbound by Mehran’s moving tale of magical realism. This upbeat novel, studded with mouth-watering Persian recipes, makes for a light but satisfying read.
